Head Injuries, Concussions, and TBIs: FAQs

What is a head injury?

A head injury, which often may be classified as a traumatic brain injury can occur as a result of any force or impact against the skull. Common injuries are a result of falls or car accidents. The severity of the head injury depends on many factors. For example, the rate of speed, force, vehicle design, and the victim’s demographics (age, weight, previous head injuries, etc.).

What is the difference between a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and a concussion?

The CDC defines a traumatic brain injury (TBI) as a disruption in the normal function of the brain that can be caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or penetrating head injury. A concussion is a form of traumatic brain injury.

Are head injuries common from car accidents?

Car accidents and unintentional falls are the most common factors resulting in head injury hospitalizations, according to the CDC. When the skull strikes an object (ie. steering wheel, airbag windshield, door frame), a head injury (minor or major) may have occurred. Often times, the sheer force of the accident can cause a traumatic brain injury where the brain collides with the interior of the skull.

What are the Most Common Head Injury Treatments After Car Accidents?

Head injury treatment depends on severity. Serious cases may require imaging, neurological evaluation, and monitoring. For mild injuries like concussions, treatment often includes rest, pain management, and neuro-cognitive therapy. Early diagnosis is key to preventing long-term effects.

Can You Die From a TBI or Concussion?

Head & Brain injuries are serious and can lead to death if not treated quickly. In car accidents, these are some of the worst types of injuries and should be assessed and treated immediately. Even if a person survives, there can be lingering effects like headaches, memory-loss, and speech or vision impairment. Your brain is a very important organ in your body, so take any head injury seriously!
