What is Active Rehab?

Active rehabilitation is a dynamic, exercise-based therapeutic approach that combines strength training and functional movement to help people recover from injuries, manage chronic pain, and regain mobility. Unlike passive treatments, active rehab engages you in targeted movements and therapeutic exercises that promote healing, improve function, and reduce the risk of re-injury.

Who is it For?

Active rehab can be incredibly helpful for those experiencing stiffness, mobility loss, muscle weakness, or reduced range of motion. These symptoms can come from trauma like an injury, car accident (such as whiplash), or from chronic pain like lingering joint pain or similar conditions. Our active rehab services aren’t just for people currently experiencing pain, but also those looking to strengthen certain areas to prevent future injury. If you’re ready to take an active role in your recovery and get back to life without limits, active rehab is for you.

Benefits of Active Rehab

The active therapeutic approach of these services accelerates healing by stimulating circulation and tissue repair, as well as improving overall mobility by targeting stiff or injured areas to restore joint range. Core and extremity exercises further build muscle support around vulnerable joints, reducing pain and enhancing strength and stability. Not only that, but working with our specialists can show you better exercises and body mechanics to manage pain independently and maintain your long-term health.

Active Rehab FAQs

How does active rehab work?

We start by evaluating your injury history, pain levels, and movement patterns to identify weaknesses and compensations. From there, our specialists will work with you to create a personalized exercise plan (stretching, strengthening, etc.) that’s tailored to your goals and tolerance. Our team will conduct guided sessions with your to challenge muscles, joints, and more to build resilience. As you progress, we’ll reassess and adjust exercise intensity, complexity, and frequency to keep progressing towards full recovery.

What’s the difference between active and passive rehab?

Active recovery involves actively engaging in exercises like lifting, stretching, and balance drills to build strength, flexibility, and endurance. On the other hand, passive rehab involves treatments like ultrasound, electrical stimulation, massages, and other methods applied to you while you remain still. In other words, they provide pain relief but don’t build lasting functional capacity.

What’s the difference between active rehab and physical therapy?

Another commonly confused comparison, physical therapy is the broader umbrella that encompasses both active and passive rehab, as well as other common methods like heat therapy, cold therapy, and more. Physical therapy can also address a wider range of conditions beyond simply recovering from injuries.
